The Jaflong. 16 Kirkgate, Ripon North Yorkshire. Tel: 01765 602597 Date of visit: 19th August 2023 Following a walk round the historic medieval city of Ripon in North Yorkshire and a look at what it had to offer, the answer is, quite a lot. Seeped in history with its centuries old Cathedral with its magnificent stained-glass windows, worth going in just to see those, to the 1700’s obelisk in the city square where at 9pm you will be treated to the daily rituals of the “Horn Blower” declaring that all was well from every corner of the Obelisk! Lots of independent shops to peruse but unfortunately a few empty ones as well. So, on to the smart modern 40 or so seater Jaflong Indian restaurant on Kirkgate, Whilst I was pursuing the menu posted outside the restaurant, a chap who was delivering Leaflets, informed me that the Jaflong was the best Indian Restaurant in the area by a long mile. Music to my ears. Situated on a narrow olde-word street that runs up to the Cathedral, it opened its doors at 5.15pm I was the first one in, as it opened. It was a bit of a task to get the chap opening, to, as a solo, to give me a table, as he explained they were already almost fully booked. He was not kidding within ten minutes of opening, the dower faced people of North Yorkshire were streaming through the doors. Do they ever smile in Yorkshire? It's cash only and is not licenced, so I had to rush round and find a cash machine. The nearest one available is in Sainsbury’s was not in use, so it was a tour round the centre and let me tell you there are not that many to be found. It was a very interesting half hour that passed by as I observed the comings and goings of the “best Indian in Ripon”, it might be the only Indian in Ripon as I did not come across any others. Within minutes, one of the two very effective girls who were waiting on, informing the very busy telephone customers that there was at least a one hours wait for takeout! One or two people came in on the chance of a table and swiftly walked out again when told there was at least an hour to wait! So, yes, a very busy place. So, to the food! Poppadom’s with an adequate pickle tray, fresh and snappy. I decided on something different for this visit, in the form of Shami Kebab, well-seasoned and perfectly spiced. Next up was a very tasty Mixed Nabawi, perfectly cooked chicken on the bone, and melt in the mouth Lamb in a gorgeous spicy sauce. A Kashmiri Pilau rice. This was totally different for me, and it was so tasty, with cashew nuts and herbs. Peshwari Naan to mop up, could have done with a few more seconds in the tandoor, but delicious for all that. Parking was remarkably easy, there is a short stay carpark for 1 hour cost a pound in the centre of the city. There is a large, long stay carpark just behind Sainsbury’s and for three pound you can park for 24 hours. Ok. For the points I’m going to give the Jaflong 9/10 well trained staff and superb cuisine. No problem taking your own alcohol. I would recommend the Jaflong but would advise booking a table well in advance.girlscouse602023-08-08Not good Had a takeaway. The main dishes consisted of mainly sauce and very little meat. The naan bread were so soggy and tasteless. The rice was stuck together. Overall, absolutely rubbish and a complete waste of money. Won't ever use it again.mrsbsouthend2023-08-06Very filling and delicious delights. We had a pre comedy night dinner here, and it was absolutely wonderful. They have a meal deal which is great value (a sort of early bird special). My friend had three dishes, I had the lamb with vegetable pillau. All of our food was top quality and the naan bread was delicious and freshly made as well. So much I could barely finish it too. The service was definitely with a smile which was refreshing too. Very close to all the shops, cathedral etc.MfM2023-07-18Best in Ripon Excellent service and food!!! Servuce is fantastic, prices all can afford. Does not serve alcohol but you can take your own, no charge.Paul F2023-06-17Best Indian we've tasted ever Was and an Airbnb in Ripon and fancied a curry. Found Jaflong Bangladeshi on Google and gave it ago. Food was our of this world and staff were very accommodating. If we are in Ripon again we will be back.HJamesB2023-05-28The best Curry in North Yorkshire Once again, a fabulous experience. You can can tell the current owners of Jaflong are really proud. The food is excellent, the service is sublime. And the ambience is light and friendly. We have been many times and always bring friends when they visit. Never a disappointing visit. One of the best Indian restaurants in North Yorkshire. And top top it all, it is unbelievable value. Well done to team JaflongJatinder2023-05-23Average Went for dinner. That was fine until I rang back as I thought they didn’t do any drinks…. Turns out only soft drinks for sale, no alcohol which was not a problem for us. So we drive to Ripon and find the restaurant to have a sign for cash only on their door. Surely the woman should have said that on the phone?! When I went to explain that I didn’t want to keep the booking because of the cash only, I was told that he would sort me out ….. what did that mean exactly?? That I’d be doing washing up in the kitchen to pay for my meal, on my anniversary!!!! I don’t think so
Weird
I ordered the lamb passanda, but rather than a creamy dish I got a bright orange/red sauce the consistency & sweetness of jam!????
It was NOT lamb passanda despite my being told it was.
I’ve searched the Iinternet & can find no mention of mango in any lamb passanda recipe!!!!?????
tastless
Twice now have ordered food from here and both times very disappointed. Tasteless ,bland not even average.
Great Food!
We just moved to the area & thought we’d try a takeaway, the food was absolutely lovely & the staff were really friendly! Thank you ☺️
Tasty curry !
This has to be my favourite curry restaurant in Ripon, been loads of times and never disappointed. Fabulous food, nice atmosphere and friendly staff – all for a reasonable price.
Dont forget to bring cash though (cards not accepted afaik) and your own booze.
Its awesome
I love this Restaurant food, hygiene and yummie.
